Secretary
for Food and Health
It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 6th Pan-Pacific
Conference on Rehabilitation.
The Pan-Pacific Conference on Rehabilitation
has a proud history of a decade in bringing advancement of rehabilitation
sciences throughout the Pan-Pacific region. The past five conferences
have enhanced greater community awareness of the importance
of rehabilitation services and promoted fruitful exchanges of
professional expertise in this field.
This year, the theme ¡§Exercise and Healthy
Living¡¨ is most apt. With the global rising trend of non-communicable
diseases, we all need to work closer together to promote healthy
lifestyles including regular exercises. I am sure you all would
have much to share and learn from each other on this.
I congratulate the Department of Rehabilitation
Sciences of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the Hong
Kong Association of Rehabilitation Medicine on their sterling
efforts in organizing the conference. And I wish you all fruitful
cross-fertilization of ideas and an enjoyable time.
Dr. York Chow
Secretary for Food and Health
President
of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
It gives me great pleasure to contribute this
message to the 6th Pan-Pacific Conference on Rehabilitation
co-organized by the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences of
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the Hong Kong Association
of Rehabilitation Medicine.
As the sole provider of tertiary education
in occupational therapy and physiotherapy in Hong Kong, PolyU
has played a key role in nurturing qualified allied health professionals.
Many of our graduates in the health care profession have contributed
their expertise to enhancing the well-being of our community.
This year is particularly meaningful for PolyU as we are honoured
to be a collaborative partner for the forthcoming Beijing Olympic
Games. Under an agreement with the Science and Education Department
of the Chinese Olympic Committee, we are sending a team of inter-disciplinary
experts to help prepare the Chinese athletes for the Games.
This Conference, which is based on the theme
of "Exercise and Healthy Living", is just one of our
many initiatives to advance the frontiers of knowledge in the
health care profession and further promote the message of healthy
living to the community. I have no doubt that it will provide
an excellent platform for participants to exchange experiences
and explore new ideas in this important area.
I would like to extend my sincere appreciation
to the Organizing Committee for their untiring efforts in staging
this extremely worthwhile event. I very much hope that all participants
will find this Conference both stimulating and rewarding.

The Chairperson of the Organizing Committee
On behalf of the organizing committee for the 6th
Pan Pacific Conference on Rehabilitation (PPCR), I would like
to extend a sincere invitation to you for coming to this conference
to be held at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University on 4 and
5 October 2008. The theme for this conference "Exercise
and Healthy Living" is encompassing to include all age
groups and all walks of lives and yet it has a unique flavor
on the what¡¦s and how's rehabilitation professionals have to
offer in promoting the concept of 'an active life means a healthier
life' in our communities.
In celebrating the 10th anniversary
of the PPCR series, the PPCR has become an icon biannual event
for the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences at Hong Kong Polytechnic
University. Over the last 5 PPCRs, we have witnessed the growth
of this conference from the beginning of mostly a local event
to the present stage of being an important biannual meeting
for rehabilitation professionals, academics, students and healthcare
administrators in the Asia Pacific region and beyond. This year,
we have the privilege to join hands with the Hong Kong Association
of Rehabilitation Medicine to organize this conference. This
interdisciplinary collaboration will provide an excellent opportunity
for therapists, doctors and other health related professionals
to learn from each other.
The organizing committee is preparing an enlightening
programme for the conference with eminent keynote speakers,
Prof. Prof. Kimberly Bennell from the University of Melbourne,
Dr Sandy Howell from University of Southern California, Prof.
Mark Tarnopolsky from McMaster University Medical Center, and
many other overseas plenary speakers to present and share at
the conference. There will be pre- and post-conference workshops
and short courses to cater for the special topics of interest
and clinical skills.
For those who have come to the previous PPCRs,
we thank you and we count on your continuous support to us in
this and the future PPCRs. For those who have not come before,
we hope you will respond positively to our sincere invitation
and come to this conference to learn from your peers and to
share with them.
Looking forward to seeing you all at the 6th
PPCR and we are confident that this conference will be a fruitful
and memorable experience for all participants.
